Intro to Digital Pattern Design

The primary goal of this course is to learn how to use the Tailornova software to create customized digital sewing patterns. During the 5 hour workshop we will learn the technical aspects of using the software, best practices for garment pattern making, fabric and ease considerations related to pattern making and software limitations / trouble shooting.

Curriculum Outline:

1. Technical Skills - Learning the Software Components

• Website overview, layout and key features

• Learn how to build custom 3D avatar

• Building and organizing your digital design library

• Garment design elements

  • Silhouettes

  • Sleeves

  • Necklines

  • Straps

  • Back Closures

  • Pockets

  • Ruffles

• Adjusting Seam Allowance

• Adding color. texture or fabric to your design

• Using the software to calculate fabric yardage

• Sewing instructions

• Downloading and Printing

• Troubleshooting and software limitations

2. Pattern Making Best Practices and Considerations

• Identifying and understanding different types of seamlines

• Understanding when its best to use princess seams vs. darts

• Learning how to customize the shape, fit and structure of the pattern

• Learning how to identify and replicate key design elements from inspiration pictures

3. Specifications and Ease

• Understanding final garment specifications

• Modifying garment fit and flare

• Adjusting pattern for different types of fabric

What you’ll need to bring:

• Water and lunch or a snack

• Laptop Computer

• 3 to 4 Design inspiration/ ideas

• Tailornova has a free version that can be used during class, however you may want to sign up for the monthly subscription to unlock all program features prior to the workshop.

• Ink pen and notebook

• A large scale print out of one of your designs. NOTE: designs must fit on two pages up to 65 inches each OR one long sheet not to exceed 129 inches. Addition pages will cost $15 each.
