4 Week Introductory Garment Construction

The primary objective of this course is to learn how to use the sewing machine. This includes learning how to balance tension, understanding and identifying machine components and their interaction with the tension as well as how to troubleshoot issues with the sewing machine, seam and threading. Students will practice these newly acquired skills while sewing a simplified garment project. You can decide to make a customized wrap skirt, tunic or tent dress. Course Details

PREREQUISITE: None! This course is designed for absolute beginners.

WHAT’S INCLUDED: The price includes the use of sewing machines, hand tools, steam irons, craft paper, workbook and custom designed large scale sewing pattern.

WHAT YOU SHOULD BRING: Drinking water and ink pen. Students are welcome to bring their own sewing machine. You may purchase fabric in studio or bring your own.

HOMEWORK: Introductory student are never assigned sewing homework, during week 3 they may be assigned “pinning” homework to prepare their project for final finishes during week 4.

ROAD MAP - WHAT’S NEXT: Once completed, students may move on to the 5 week Basic Alterations class or the 6 Week Intermediate Garment Construction class.

DURATION: 12hrs, Classes meet once a week for 3 hours each session.

LOCATION: 4917 Schaefer Rd, Suit 200 Dearborn, MI 48126 - Entrance and parking in the rear.

COST: $185 - Split payment plans available for an additional $25 processing fee

Course Objectives and Schedule

Students will:

  • Learn components of the sewing machine

  • Learn how to load the bobbin & thread the sewing machine

  • Learn how to balance the thread tension

  • Gain control over the sewing speed and pace

  • Learn about backstitching and pivoting

  • learn how to measure and mark seam allowances
