Sew Modest Summer Camp 2026

During this week we will make fabric selections, draw dress sketches and complete team building exercises that are designed to break the ice and help us develop an emotionally safe space.

Journaling/Discussion Topic: What inspires you? Describe something that takes your breath away. What are your favorite features about yourself? What are your least favorite?

Students will learn the parts and components of the sewing machine, how to thread the machine, balance the tension and complete the skills practice sheet. The skills assessment is designed to help students practice maintaining an even straight seam, learn how to backstitch, learn to pivot their seams, and control their sewing speed.

Journaling/Discussion Topic: Managing Mistakes & Self Talk. What you do say to yourself when things go wrong? What do you say to (or think about) yourself when something is hard? What is “Self-Talk” and why is it important to develop positive self-talk?

During week three students will finalize their designs by creating a 3D fashion illustration, make their fabric selections, take their body measurements and create their sewing patterns.

Journaling/Discussion Topic: Weight, Body Image, Health and Self-Love. If my body could talk right now, what would it say? What’s one way I can celebrate my body every day? What’s something that makes me feel good about my body? What’s something that makes me feel worse about my body?

Students will begin to bring their designs to life by cutting out their pieces and preparing the fabrics for sewing.

Journaling/Discussion Topic: Recognizing and Managing Anxiety. Anxiety is when something causes us to feel nervous and afraid. People who have an Anxiety disorder have a more intense reaction. Think of a situation that made you feel anxious. How did it feel? What did you do/say? How did you feel after?

During week five students will begin sewing their dress bodice, sew their darts and pockets if applicable.

Journaling/Discussion Topic: Confidence vs. Arrogance. Are you confident or arrogant? How can you tell the difference between confidence and arrogance? How can we recognize it in ourselves? How can we recognize it in other? Why is it important to know the difference?

During week five students will begin sewing and attaching their dress skirts and sleeves.

Journaling/Discussion Topic: Fixing and Respecting Her Crown! Talking about supporting, praising and uplifting the talents and abilities of other women without feeling threatened or intimidated.

During week five students work on finishing the details of their dress including sewing in the zipper.

Journaling/Discussion Topic: Coping Skills. What are coping skills? List examples of healthy and unhealthy coping skills. What has worked for you in the past?

During week five students complete the finishing elements of their gown including hemming, buttons and snaps.
